FIVE students at Emmanuel College scooped a clean sweep of A*s in today’s GCSEs.

Jonathan Iceton and Charlotte Sefton led the field with 11 A*s, while talented artist Wenqian Zeng, Olivia Moran and Anna Spence achieved ten A*s.

Olivia achieved an average mark of 88 per cent across all her subjects, and a perfect 100 per cent in French and Latin.

“I’m really pleased with my results,” said Olivia, 16, of Gateshead.

“I put in an awful lot of work revising at home, sometimes up to three hours a night, every night of the week.

“I would have been happy with all As so I’ve exceeded my own expectations with ten A*s.”

Wenqian, 16, of Gateshead, who is staying on at Emmanuel College to study A level art, said: “It’s an amazing result to get ten A*s.

“I’ve done so well here at Emmanuel, with the help of so many amazing teachers, that I know this is the best place for me to continue my studies at A level.”

In addition, 34 students achieved ten or more grade As.

Overall, the college matched last year’s results with 84 per cent of students hitting the benchmark of five A*-C grades including English and maths, results which led to Emmanuel being confirmed as the top state school in Tyneside in the Real Schools Guide.

In maths, the results were close to establishing a new record for the college with 94 per cent of students achieving a grade C or better and 38 per cent of grades being an A or A*.

Students performed at a high level in the creative arts, with 100 per cent of students gaining a C or better in art and two thirds of the cohort achieving and A*.

Retiring Latin teacher Ann Allen ended her career on a high note with every one of her GCSE students achieving A* once again.

In technology, 64 per cent of grades were at A or better.

Principal Jonathan Winch said: “Grade boundary changes have made this an interesting year for schools and I take encouragement from the increasing rigour in our education system nationally, which continues to raise the bar in a drive towards higher standards.

“Those students who have worked hard deserve to reap the rewards today and I also congratulate our teachers who demonstrate continued commitment to supporting students to achieve at a high level.

“We celebrate with them today and look forward to Monday when we will be enrolling many of our GCSE students, as well as those joining Emmanuel from other schools, into our Sixth Form.”
