A CHAIRMAN of governors at a leading school for children with complex needs has been awarded the MBE.

Paul Chubb, chairman of governors at The Dales School, Morton-on-Swale, was recognised for his services to careers education and guidance.

Mr Chubb, of Thrintoft, nearNorthallerton, was latterly executive director of Careers England, has been associated with the school for the past 15 years and is serving his second stint as chairman.

He said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to receive the MBE, which I feel is as much a celebration of the work carried out at The Dales School as it is for the work undertaken nationally to promote quality assured career education and guidance for England’s school and college students.

“At The Dales School it is fantastic to see young people come into the school and watch them grow and develop, to achieve things that previously they could never attempt.”

Mr Chubb came to the region in 1981 as deputy county careers officer with North Yorkshire County Council. He was persuaded to be a governor at The Dales School by the then chairman of the education committee John Dennis.

“I didn’t have any background in anything other than mainstream education and even then it was more post-16,” said Mr Chubb, who is also a lay minister in the church.

“But lots of features of governance are the same. My passion has always been quality assurance in education. What I love about quality assurance is that you have external experts in their fields who know what they are looking for and our job is to make life for all of our students the very best it can be.”
