PARTY pupils painted their school red white and blue to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Gurney Pease Academy, Darlington, staged an afternoon tea party with regal games and a royal banquet after making their own crown jewels to wear to the celebration.

Singing along to some of the Queen’s favourite tunes from the 1940s, students from reception to Year 6 enjoyed a picnic party including sandwiches (provided by catering company Mellors), cakes, crisps and drinks before enjoying an afternoon ice cream treat.

Principal Alison Sinclair said: “Everyone has had a fabulous time celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday.

“As well as learning about the many historical events that have happed throughout her majesty’s lifetime, it has also been an opportunity to share good British values with the children and to see why we should all be proud of our country and our Queen.”

Pupil Paige Williams, nine, of Darlington added: “It’s been really good to have a party at school for the Queen and to sing happy birthday to her.

“She has lived a long time and I think she is the oldest person that I know.”
