A SCHOOLS youngest pupils got their first taste of competition at a sunny sports day.

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at Barnard Castle Preparatory School took part in running races, an obstacle course, throwing events and a traditional egg and spoon race.

The finale was a relay shuttle with the children, who are aged four-seven, put into teams.

Pupils from Year 6 helped teachers by handing out stickers to the competitors, who all received an ice cream at the end of the event.

Prep School Headmistress Laura Turner: "Our Pre-Prep Sports Day is a lovely day of racing when our youngest children get to spend time out on our glorious playing fields.

"The children love to compete especially when they're cheered on by the many parents, grandparents and younger siblings who come along to support them."

A cakes and bakes refreshments tent run by the Barney Friends parents' group raised £130, which will be donated towards a children's bereavement counselling service at St Teresa's Hospice in Darlington.
