HUNDREDS of walkers swapped pajamas for fancy dress for a midnight meander that raised thousands of pounds for a cause close to their hearts.

Alice and Wonderland characters galore descended on South Park, Darlington, for the 9th annual St Teresa’s Hospice Midnight Walk.

The magical world of Lewis Carroll came to life as 205 walkers dressed as their favourite character from the classic tale.

The themed event, which has raised more than £100,000 since it began in 2008, took fundraisers on a 1.5 mile stroll around the park.

St Teresa’s Hospice chief executive Jane Bradshaw said: “In our 30th year the hospice needs your help more than ever as we open our new 10-bed in-patient unit to help more people with complex problems and their families.

“Many people walked in memory of loved ones they have lost and there could be no better way of celebrating their lives.”

Walkers received an Alice-themed goody bag for taking part and a hot drink and bacon butty at the finish line.

Registration for the walk cost £10, with entrants asked to try and raise £50 sponsorship money for the charity.

Mrs Bradshaw thanked volunteer marshals, hospice staff, the Rotary Club, Houndgate Townhouse and 1st Stop Party Shop.

The £1.2m unit is designed to offer a five-star service for patients and their families in Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.

All ten private rooms, which open out into the hospice gardens or have their own private woodland balcony, are equipped with an en-suite wet room, energy-efficient under-floor heating, modern ventilation, television and controllable mood lighting.

Medical equipment, including a piped oxygen supply and built-in hoists that fold out of sight, will allow patients with mobility issues the chance to transfer easily from bed to en-suite and a separate assisted bathroom, with adjustable bath seating and wall-mounted television, is available for patients who prefer a soak.
