The CREAM of an academy’s sporting talent has been recognised at a special awards ceremony.

Trinity Academy, in Thorne, celebrated the individual and team successes of the past year in netball, hockey, football, rugby, cricket, rounders and athletics.

An audience of students, staff, parents and friends applauded the young stars in the academy’s lecture theatre as they received their awards and watched a video and photographic retrospective.

Looking forward, head of girls’ PE Katie O’Brien said the summer Olympics in Rio was already having a positive impact on interest in sport, especially athletics and hockey.

Last year the academy competed in 80 fixtures with staff and students giving thousands of hours to sport.

Miss O’Brien said: “Our students continue to be excellent ambassadors and we as staff are proud to have them represent us as an Academy. Their commitment, levels of enthusiasm and sheer determination never cease to amaze us.

“I would like to thank everyone for their contribution, whether it be as a member of staff putting in relentlosess hours and sharing your expertise, paretns who serve as the biggest support act and, of course, the students themselves, who make our job as PE teachers even more rewarding.”

Students received accolades for Players’ Player and Trinity Player of the Year, as well as an overall top performance award, in each sport.

For the first time there was a special award for the Team of the Year, which went to the championship-winning Year 7 netball team.

The annual Barry Marks Award for outstanding performance went to Olivia Jenkins.

Miss O’Brien said of Olivia, 14: “Throughout the year she has gone above and beyond. She plays for every single team, which means training every night after school. On a Friday when there is no training she comes to the PE department asking to do something. She is a true ambassador for sport, a natural leader and a lovely person.”
