STUDENTS and staff paid their respects at Darlington School of Mathematics and Science with a moving ceremony that also remembered two ex-pupils who lost their lives in recent conflicts.

Former students Flt Lt Steven Johnson and Pt John King were both killed serving their country in Afghanistan.

A special assembly was followed by a ceremony in the school quad at which newly appointed headteacher Mo Wilkinson played The Last Post on the trumpet.

Members of the school’s Army Cadet Force, Simon English, Josh Cooley, Marcus Gowling, Adam Scott and Jack Dawson, helped organise the event and sold poppies around the academy.

Mrs Wilkinson said: “Remembering all the people who gave so much for their country is always an emotional time but losing two ex-students gives our annual ceremony added poignancy. Our students certainly played a part in ensuring that the next generation never forgets their sacrifice.”
