A STUDENT’S award had the audience standing to attention as she became the first in her college’s history to secure a place at the prestigious Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

Darlington College student Chloe Dent has secured an unconditional offer as she pursues her dream to become an officer in the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps.

Currently studying Level 3 Uniformed Public Services at Darlington College, the 17-year-old was among a host of students to be recognised for their efforts at an annual awards ceremony.

“I have always been interested in the military,” said Chloe, of Northallerton, who picked up the curriculum manager’s award for Uniformed Services and Principal’s Student of the Year accolade.

“I have really enjoyed the course at Darlington College where the tutors are so supportive. They helped me realise that I could get into Sandhurst and I’m thrilled to have made it.”

Chloe will begin her 42-week officer training in March next year and leave Sandhurst as a second lieutenant.

“It really is what I want to do even though the military work in dangerous conflict zones around the world,” she said.

Her tutor Gary Paxton added: “She thoroughly deserves her success as she is a brilliant student, with a positive attitude and high degree of enthusiasm. I look forward to her completing her training when I will be very happy to salute her on her achievement.”

Around 50 students were presented with awards by the college’s principal Kate Roe and chairman of the board Pat Howarth in curriculum areas ranging from maths and English to catering, hair and beauty, engineering and construction.

Mr Howarth said: “It is a great honour for me to present the awards to so many talented young people.

“Darlington College is a place everyone can learn, develop their skills and further the careers that interest them. It is an excellent facility with dedicated staff who ensure students achieve their very best.”
