AN academy for students with complex needs has received a positive report from inspectors, following an HMI monitoring visit, as it strives for the best possible outcome for pupils.

Staff and students at Beaumont Hill Academy, Darlington, part of The Education Village Academy Trust, received an acknowledgement from schools inspectorate Ofsted for demonstrating progress towards improvement since their inspection in January 2017.

The 268 pupil academy supports children with a range of abilities, from profound and multiple learning difficulties to those pupils accessing the mainstream GCSE curriculum.

Principal Caroline Green, who took over as the new head of the academy in September 2016, said: “We are delighted that we were able to demonstrate to inspectors during a monitoring visit that the academy has made significant improvements since their last visit.

“We understand that we still have further improvements to make but are working hard to ensure these are made in a timely manner.

“It has been a very challenging time for everyone but we are extremely fortunate to have had the fantastic support of parents, teachers, support staff, students and the EVAT governing body while making these key improvements.”

Beaumont Hill Academy will now look to focus on the further development of teaching and learning strategies with a big push towards improving attendance to ensure pupils outcomes are maximised and they reach their full potential.

Ofsted inspectors are expected to return at the end of the year to review progress.

“Every child, no matter what their abilities, deserves the best education possible – and that is what we are striving to achieve,” said Mrs Green.

“We have a fabulous team of committed teachers and support staff and senior management who are working extremely hard toward helping us be judged a good school once again.”

Head boy Jordan Thompson-Green, 14, of Darlington, added: “Beaumont Hill Academy is a wonderful school.

“When I first came here I needed a lot of help in my lessons and the teachers were always there to give me support.

“I’m now working towards taking nine GCSEs which I would not have been able to do without all their help.”
