YOUNG athletes have given their academy a sporting send-off as one era of their education comes to a close.

Students in Year 6 at Bede Academy, in Blyth, took part in their final sports day as primary pupils before they prepare to move to the academy's north site in September.

The oldest students at Bede South were joined by competitors from Year 5 for a morning of races and field events at the Delaval Sports Ground.

Competitions including throwing balls, javelin and discus as well as jumping and catching events, hurdles and a sprint.

Student Nathan Herridge, 11, of Blyth, said: "I wish we had another sports day before we leave because it's quite sad but I'll carry on trying to do my best at Bede South while I’m still here. I like science so I'm looking forward to biology at Bede North."

Layla Mageean, 11, of Blyth, added: "It's sad in one way to be leaving but I'm happy too because there are exciting new things to look forward to at Bede North."

The competitions for the older students followed two other days of sports activities at Bede Academy for children from Nursery to Year 2, with Years 3 and 4 bringing this year's sports days to a close.
