A SCHOOL community recorded a stitch in time as a major project came to a successful conclusion.

Haughton Academy science technician Elaine Bates launched the cross stitch project at Easter hoping to complete the collage by the end of the school year.

Just in time and almost 55,000 stitches later, the last panel was finished to form the periodic table of 110 elements.

The work of art, completed by staff, students and families, will take pride of place hanging in the science corridor at the Education Village, Darlington.

“'All secondary children will be familiar with the periodic table by the time they leave therefore will appreciate the picture, Elaine said.

“It has taken months to plan and complete and has been a wonderful way to bring together the whole Education Village community.

“I’m so pleased and humbled to have come up with an idea that has been so well supported. I’ve met people from all over the village who otherwise I might not have come across.”
