LOCKDOWN learners have been rising to the challenge of home-schooling with an array of ingenious projects.

Pupils from Marchbank Free School, part of the Education Village Academy Trust, Darlington, have come up with a variety of ways to continue learning during the lockdown forced by Covid-19.

Their creativity has seen them build scale models of Stonehenge, a volcano and waterfalls, walk a mile towards a Hike to the Moon challenge set by a local scout troupe, support the NHS with some spectacular rainbow pictures and create a glow in the dark ball, complete with instructions for classmates.

As part of a project entitled Tribal Tales, pupils have taken an in-depth look at people living in the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages, while others have written a newspaper and extended their outdoor learning by tackling a scented garden by planting seeds, labelling parts of a plant and drawing pictures of flowers and creating a firepit.

Executive principal of Marchbank Free School Caroline Green said: “These are challenging times for our children, their parents and carers as they try to learn away from the classroom, their friends and teachers.

“I have been incredibly impressed with the level of their engagement and their ingenuity to produce a very high standard of work during the lockdown period. I’d also like to thank parents and carers for supporting their children so well during these difficult times and teachers for all their efforts.”
