A LUXURY car launched to the world by James Bond actor Daniel Craig has been revealing its secrets in an initiative designed to boost literacy among young students.

A £100,000 Range Rover Sport took centre stage at Trinity Academy, in Thorne, in an exercise aimed at improving the use of English language.

English intervention progress co-ordinator Kelly Jagger borrowed the range-topping Autobiography model from Stratstone, Doncaster, which first loaned a car for the literacy project last year.

Year 8 students spent time exploring the Range Rover’s features – including satellite television, Xbox compatibility, automatic rear tailgate opening, automatic sill steps, reverse camera and alloy wheels costing £1,250 each.

They then had to use their command of English to write a sales pitch that would persuade a prospective buyer to order a car.

Head of English Laura Deighton told the students: “This car was launched to the world by James Bond actor Daniel Craig in New York and you can see a video of exactly the same model being driven by him around the streets of Manhattan.

“It is a very special car and we’re very grateful to Stratstone for bringing it and allowing the students to learn about it.”

Mrs Jagger added: “Matthew is really pleased to support the academy in such an exciting initiative.

“Reading and writing are hugely important to a successful education because they allow children to access the world at large.

“Illiteracy is life-limiting. We take it for granted but unless you can read how will you be able to understand instructions, signs, or the labels on medication? If you don’t have the basic skills then your world becomes very narrow.”

Student Alex Young, 12, said: “It was really amazing seeing a car that Daniel Craig had helped launch and this was a great way to make reading and writing interesting.”

Mr Thompson will judge the students’ work and award the best examples with a variety of prizes.
