HUNDREDS of young athletes battled it out in a national cross-country competition designed to promoted sport, health and fitness.

Up to 640 children from 16 primary schools in Northallerton and the surrounding villages competed in the Hambleton heat of the Sainsbury’s School Games.

Years 3 and 4 runners tackled a 1200m course while Years 5 and 6 took up a 1500m challenge around the fields of The Allertonshire and Hambleton Leisure Centre.

Eight races took place and the top 12 runners from each age group qualify for the Area Finals at Knayton on November 12. The North Yorkshire Finals will be staged at Catterick racecourse in March.

Allertonshire School students acted as pacemakers, marshals and a supportive and enthusiastic crowd.

The event was organised by head of PE Sandra Horner, fellow teachers Eddie Myers and Kirsty Thompson and Duncan Burgess, of Sainsbury’s School Games.

Mrs Horner said: “We have had a fantastic day and the atmosphere has been fabulous. It is a great introduction to cross country and a useful way for the primary school children to experience a taste of life at the Allertonshire.

“It is really good for our students to act as mentors and they accepted this responsibility extremely well. We have some amazing children here at The Allertonshire.”
