A YOUNG cellist’s fortunes are rising through the scales after being selected for a prestigious orchestra.

Joshua Connor, a pupil at Cockerton C of E Primary School, Darlington, will join the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain after a successful audition.

The nine-year-old, of Darlington, played two pieces for experts, called Nina and Tarantella, and had to complete some sight reading exercises.

“It went really well,” said Joshua, whose parents and two sisters are all musical. “I started playing the cello about five years ago and have reached Grade 5. I would love to study music at university and one day play for the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

“I am really excited about being accepted into the National Children’s Orchestras and am looking forward to joining the summer school near London.”

Joshua already travels to Newcastle for his lessons and hopes to become involved in a regional orchestra, which is based in Leeds. He plays the cello in Bondgate and Cockerton Methodists churches.

Key stage 2 leader Michael Joyeux said: “Joshua is a great all rounder and very talented musically and academically. He excels at everything he does and everyone in school is very proud of his achievements.”
