HOCKEY players had to endure the agony of a dying seconds goal that pushed them into the runners up slot despite thrashing the tournament winners.

Northallerton’s Allertonshire School under 12 mixed hockey team were unable to keep out their opponents in the last five seconds of their match thereby notching up their only defeat in the six game North Yorkshire Schools Tournament.

Their overall results in the competition, staged at Manor School, York, of four wins, one draw and one defeat dropped them into the runners up position – despite beating tournament winners 5-2.

Seven teams from across North Yorkshire took part in the five-a-side contest that saw boys and girls play alongside each other.

Millie Smith, 12, said: “We came so close and played so well that we couldn’t help feeling a bit robbed with the overall result.”

Head of PE Sandra Horner added: “It was incredibly tight between the top teams, which was reflected in the closest of results.

“Our students put on quite a show, particularly to beat the tournament winners so emphatically, so they can feel very proud of their performances.”
