YOUNG people were urged to grasp the opportunities offered to them as staff and students reflected on the last ten years of their academy under the leadership of its outgoing principal.
The King's Academy held its 12th annual prizegiving with the theme of thanksgiving.
Among those giving thanks were head boy Ben Rowden and head girl Paige Cope who, along with Principal Chris Drew, are leaving the academy this summer.
Ben told the students: "The opportunity to grow and develop as a person is what separates this school from the others. The opportunities are mind-blowing; going to Mexico to build a house for a family tops it off for me.
"Every single one of you has these opportunities; you can leave thinking it was just school, or you can take them."
Paying tribute to the teachers, Paige said: "You have made me the person I am today. You have given me so much support and you really do care."
Mr Drew, who is stepping down to take up a new development role with the Emmanuel Schools Foundation, thanked students, parents and carers, staff and governors, past and present.
He told the students: "We don't mind if you are in the top, middle or lower sets, or if learning is easy or a struggle for you. All that we ever ask of you is that you try your hardest and try to close the gaps in your knowledge and understanding so that you can make progress over time and achieve the very best that you can."
"This school is about much more than exam results and academic progress, as important as they are. We seek to instil in you values and character that will set you up well, not just in your teenage years but also in adult life, and set you on the right course for happiness and fulfilment."
The ceremony recognised students for effort and achievement, citizenship and community contribution, and across all subjects.
The Outstanding Student of the Year Award went to Olviya Silvary for her effort and contribution and for being an excellent role model.
Mr Drew said: "Olviya wrote an excellent piece of writing on disability discrimination. She always volunteers for house events and makes a huge effort to support other students. She has had a truly remarkable year."
The event was also a showcase for student talent including pianist Daniela Cebotari, dancer Lydia Peverell and singer musician Haleema Anwar.
The special guest was accomplished Linthorpe pianist Alison Frances Gill, who played demanding pieces from her extensive repertoire.
