SCHOOLCHILDREN have been given an early glimpse of college life in a taster session designed to help them choose a career path.

Around 115 Year 8 students from Polam Hall School, Darlington, spent the morning at Darlington College in an initiative aiming to show them the range of options in further education as they begin to think about their GCSEs.

Students were given a tour of the college’s facilities, from automotive engineering, robotics and construction to hairdressing and beauty, catering and media.

They then took part in a host of activities linked to the college’s diverse curriculum before hearing a talk by the Royal Navy on opportunities as a submariner.

Darlington College’s marketing and engagement manager Claire Turner said: “The visit was part of our school and community engagement programme which is offered to all Year 8 students in the town.

“Next year they will select their GCSE options and begin to consider further and higher education as well as career prospects. Having an early look round a college really helps them focus on myriad learning opportunities that will become available to them.”

Polam Hall School careers lead Paul Robson added: “The children have really enjoyed the visit which has opened their eyes and expanded their horizons.

“Seeing a girl studying automotive engineering and a boy learning to be a chef has also broken down stereotypes. Many of our students have never been exposed to college life as their families didn’t go on to further education. So initiatives like these are invaluable as the Year 8s prepare to make their GCSE selections next year.”
