WALKERS have trodden the path of centurions in a charity hike that raised thousands for cancer research.

A 40-strong team of Carmel College staff, their families and friends braved autumnal conditions to raise more than £2,300 for Cancer Research UK.

The 20km route took the Darlington contingent through the wilds of Northumberland, from Chollerford to Steel Rigg, in the footsteps of legions of Romans along Hadrian’s Wall.

Carmel College chief executive Maura Regan said: “They walked through the beautiful and historic countryside for 12½ miles, up and down dale, encouraging and supporting one another, with the sole purpose of raising awareness for cancer research, which was a tremendous effort.

“Sponsorship added a stunning £2,301.25 for the charity’s vital work. We would like to thank all those who sponsored the event, bought charity wristbands and the team who organised this fantastic and worthwhile event.”
