A CHARITY bridge event proved to be a trump card for fundraising as hundreds of players bid to support a hospice with the help of a national expert.

Celebrated professional bridge player, teacher and writer Andrew Robson drew passionate players from Newcastle to Leeds for a day of tuition in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice.

Staged at The Croft Hotel, Croft, the bridge extravaganza raised more than £6,000 for the much-loved charity, which helps people with life-limiting illnesses in Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.

The event was organised by hospice volunteer Grace Hunter and fellow bridge players Pauline and John Hodges.

“We are all keen bridge players and had been to one of Andrew’s seminars in London – he’s brilliant,” said Grace. “We were lucky enough to secure his only date left for this year and we are delighted so many people joined us from right across the North in aid of a very good cause.”

Andrew, who is a columnist in Country Life and The Times, said: “I’m currently on a 15-day tour and was only too pleased to help raise as much money as possible for this local charity. I know they do such a great job helping people and their families.”
