A TALENTED young student who arrived in the UK seven years and couldn’t speak a word of English has passed her GCSEs with flying colours.
Subi Gurung, 16, from Catterick Garrison is particularly proud of her achievement in English Literature.
She passed an impressive 7 GCSES at Risedale Sports & Community College after arriving with her family from Nepal.
She now plans to study A-Levels at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Psychology, Sociology, Applied Science, and Health & Social Care, and plans to become a nurse in the UK.
“I am so happy and so proud because when I come here I couldn’t speak English, and now I have a qualification in it,” she said.
Subi was one of dozens of Year 11 students at Risedale celebrating a bumper crop of GCSEs yesterday.
Among them fellow Nepalese students Bishradham Rai, 16, who achieved five As and three Bs, and is considering English Literature, Philosophy Ethics and History, and shared his success over the phone with his parents who are visiting relatives in Nepal.
“I am so pleased and so happy today. All my hard work has paid off, and now I can think of a career in archaeology or perhaps journalism,” he said.
His cousin Rajbol Rai, who also came to the UK with the Nepalese Gurkhas, notched up seven GCSEs and is thinking of a career in Computer Science.
Also celebrating was Rosalyn Mitchell from Catterick who achieved four As, 4 Bs, and three Cs, and is heading to Darlington College for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.
She has set her sights on aeronautical engineering and wants to work for British Aerospace one day.
Kora Dollimore, from Catterick, was delighted with her results which included two A*s, three As, and two Bs, and now plans a career one day in criminal forensics or psychology.
“All my hard work paid off. I didn’t like Science and was predicted a B so really chuffed that I managed to get an A. I feel really happy today and pleased that the work I did has come to fruition,” she said.
And classmate Chloe Dangerfield from Catterick achieved eight GCSE passes including one A* and three As, and has landed a place at the prestigious Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College in Loughborough.
Chloe went through the RAF selection process to win the place, and is on a career path to be an engineering or logistics officer within the RAF.
She is also a keen sportswoman and plays netball and plans to take up women’s rugby at college.
“I am really really pleased because this is exactly what I want to do and I know there will be so many opportunities at Welbeck,” she said.
