YOUNG artists put beetles, bugs and butterflies under the microscope to create a carousel of artwork on mini beasts and their habitats.

Primary pupils at Beaumont Hill Academy displayed their collection of creepy crawly creations to an audience of parents as part of a half term topic looking at the natural world.

More than 80 pupils at the academy for children with a range of specialist educational needs used art and design techniques in colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space to produce collages, paintings, drawings, mobiles and paper chains depicting animals and their homes.

Pastoral lead for primary Kirsty Coates said: “We had nine classes of students take part in the art carousel and all of the pupils were totally absorbed in the project.

“We invited parents to come and work alongside their children and many of them could not believe just how creative the children had been.

“There were some fantastic comments from mums, dads and carers including how well the children had coped and how proud they were of what they had produced.”

As well as drawings and paintings pupils also produced multi-sensory artwork including bubble wrap animals, tactile sand pictures and feather bird sculptures using the themes of rainforest, desert, sky, arctic, jungle, underwater and dinosaurs.

All artwork will be displayed in classrooms for the remainder of the term with pupils giving talks on the various animals and their habitats to class visitors.

Primary lead Tess Wright added: “The art carousel was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to work together to produce some outstanding pieces of work.

“They each got a chance to visit all of the other classrooms, to extend and consolidate their learning and understanding of a variety of habitats around the world.”
