AWARD winning students were urged to be proud of their achievements as a former pupil returned to her old school to present prizes.

Care Quality Commission’s chief inspector of adult social care Andrea Sutcliffe was special guest at Longfield Academy of Sports’ annual prize-giving ceremony.

The top civil servant had high praise for students who were being rewarded for their academic and sporting prowess.

She said: “It is obvious that Longfield has some remarkably talented pupils who are ready to take on the world.

“Always be proud of yourself, your achievements and where you come from. But don’t forget your family, friends and to have fun along the way.”

Mrs Sutcliffe left Longfield in 1980 and studied at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College before reading a degree in London.

“I stayed in the capital but love to come back up North for some respite and some fresh air,” she said.

“I love my job, which isn’t easy and requires making difficult decisions, but I feel by doing it I can make a difference to people’s lives.

“To get where you want to be takes hard work but by working hard people have offered me opportunities I would not have otherwise received.”

She urged students to make their plans but also to expect the unexpected and adapt when they go awry. “Always be positive and persevere,” she added.

Head teacher Susan Johnson said: “The young people receiving awards represents the very best in what has been an excellent year.

“There is no better testament for our hope for the future than to acknowledge the achievements of those who will shape it.”

Awards were presented for the best performances in subject areas, forms, the best GSCE results, progress, perseverance and friendship.
