A YOUNG athlete is taking life at a sprint after picking up a top award.

Richmond School and Sixth Form College student Adam Walker has been voted Athlete of the Year by Richmond and Zetland Harriers.

The 16-year-old, of Richmond, has already enjoyed considerable success including a gold medal as part of the North-East of England 4x400m relay team at the UK School Games.

After a winter of cross country running he is preparing for the athletics season during which he aims to improve his personal best to under 50 seconds.

“I used to play football and everyone commented on how fast I could run,” said Adam. “Then my friend’s mum said I should join the harriers and I haven’t looked back since.

“The aim is to keep improving my times, hopefully compete in English Schools and eventually be selected to run for my country.”

Assistant head teacher Leslie Richardson said: “We are all thrilled with Adam’s success so far and he richly deserves this accolade. We will watch his development keenly and look forward to seeing him compete at the highest level.”
