CHILDREN enjoyed a school day fit for a king as they celebrated coronation day in style.
Barnard Castle Preparatory School pupils turned red, white and blue for a day of learning around the monarchy.
Year groups were given the chance to study a 1937 commemorative book published to mark the coronation of George VI, the current King’s grandfather, in which they saw pictures of the same golden carriage he will use on his special day.
Pupils competed to produce the best throne from recycled materials, one of which was made from sticks from Barney’s forest school to reflect King Charles’ interest in everything ecological.
Children also spent time drawing and colouring King Charles and other royal images including the corgis and also enjoyed a special tea party where they raised a toast to the King.
The whole school attended special services in chapel to mark the historic event of the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla which was officiated by Rev Alec Harding.
He told pupils: “It is a very special event when we crown a king and queen which will be watched by people around the world.”
Headmistress Laura Turner said: “There is a real buzz in school around the coronation and the children are very excited talking about the various street parties they will be attending.
“They have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the monarchy and the traditions surrounding coronations which has been evident in the work they have produced.”
