A SCHOOL is parading its support for Armed Forces families with an official pledge to help the military community.

Barnard Castle School has signed the Armed Forces Covenant recognising the impact service life can have on military personnel, veterans, reservists and their families.

First published in 2011, the Covenant ensures members of the services community are not disadvantaged in any way compared to other British citizens and are treated with fairness and respect.

Barnard Castle School is now a Bronze Award holder under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

Headmaster David Cresswell said: “Signing the Armed Forces Covenant is not only an honour but a clear expression of our values at Barnard Castle School. We recognise the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and their families and we are determined to ensure that they receive the support, respect and sense of belonging that they so richly deserve.”

Forces Family Lead at the School and a military spouse Emma Purvis added: “Having experienced the unique challenges of military life, I know first-hand how vital it is for Forces families to feel supported and understood. This Covenant is more than a document, it’s a promise to create a caring and flexible environment where all Forces children and families can thrive.”

Signing the Covenant reaffirms the school’s commitment to supporting serving personnel, veterans, reservists and Forces families as valued members of its community.

The Covenant outlines a comprehensive range of commitments that reflect the school’s ethos and inclusive values.

The pledge includes:

  • Providing bespoke pastoral care and a dedicated Forces Families Lead to ensure the wellbeing of services children.
  • Establishing a Barney Forces Family support network for pupils with close military connections.
  • Maintaining affordable boarding for families supported by the Continuity of Education Allowance and offering military discounts for others.
  • Promoting awareness through Armed Forces events, staff training and public engagement via a new Forces Families Hub on its website.
  • Offering employment flexibility and additional leave for Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and reservists.
