PUPILS have been brushing up their artistic skills in honour of one of history’s most celebrated Renaissance men.
Children from Keeble Gateway Academy, Thirsk, produced their own masterpieces as the world celebrated the birthday of renowned polymath Leonardo da Vinci.
The school became an art gallery as staff, pupils and parents marked World Art Day, an international event proclaimed by UNESCO to promote artistic creation, diversity and education, symbolizing world peace, freedom of expression and the importance of art in society.
A whole-school event, it centred on the theme of colour with children from Nursery to Year 6 spending the afternoon creating artwork inspired by a range of international artists.
These included Alma Thomas, Hervé Tullet, Wassily Kandinsky, Pacita Abad and Megan Coyle and each year group explored different techniques, such as painting, collage and mixed media, to produce vibrant and expressive pieces.
The school was then transformed into a gallery space for the ‘Keeble Art Gallery of Colour’ experience with artwork displayed throughout the building.
Parents and carers were invited in after school to view the exhibition and celebrate the children’s work.
Jonny Davies, head teacher of Keeble Gateway Academy, which is part of the Elevate Multi Academy Trust, said: “The event aimed to promote creativity, artistic expression and an appreciation of artists from around the world, while giving pupils the opportunity to experiment with colour and take pride in their achievements.
“It was brilliant. Families loved coming in to see the amazing artwork our children had produced. Our art curriculum is a real strength of our school and it was wonderful to share that with the community.”
