UP and coming artists have been recognised for their outstanding talents with a prestigious award.

Cleveland College of Art & Design students Amy Hugill and Emmanuella Wrightson were jointly presented with the Harry Lorraine Award for most promising student, at Cleveland Art Society’s summer exhibition.

The late Harry Lorraine was a prominent member of the Cleveland Art Society who set up a legacy to encourage the talents of young artists across Teesside.

Chairwoman of the society Janet Waller said: “Work by six CCAD students was selected by the college’s curriculum manager Margaret Mineham for consideration by our judging panel.

“I, our treasurer Daphne Wattis and committee member Gill Bradley, all deliberated at length over the outstanding portfolios of work presented to us and it was incredibly difficult to decide on just one winner.

“In the end we couldn’t choose between Amy and Emmanuella’s work and decided to award them both first place.”

Amy, 17, who has recently completed her first year of entertainment design crafts and Emmanuella, a first year fine art student, who was unable to attend the award ceremony, each received a certificate and art voucher for Hobson’s Art Supply Shop, Roman Road, Middlesbrough.

Presenting the prizes society president Ian Lightfoot said: “This is the 13th year of the Harry Lorraine Awards and each year the standard just keeps getting better.
“Every year I go to the CCAD summer shows and it is incredible to see the full gamut of skills and talent that the students put on display.

“The college teaches students to excel in a wide variety of arts and design, including photography, textiles, drawing, jewellery, ceramics, costume and fashion, opening up a broad spectrum of career opportunities.

“CCAD students also make excellent teachers, many of who I have employed over the years. This is only Amy’s first year in entertainment design crafts and already her talent is showing through. We hope she continues to flourish during her time at CCAD.”

Amy, of Billingham, added: “I knew that my tutor had put forward my work for consideration but I wasn’t aware that I’d been shortlisted. It came as a big surprise to learn that I’d won.”
