MUD and water proved no barrier to intrepid cross-country runners as they battled difficult conditions to take the honours.

Richmond School and Sixth Form College’s cross-country team took four first places and a second at the Hambleton and Richmondshire Area Championships, staged in Northallerton.

Waterlogged conditions worked to the advantage of Richmond School athletes, who fielded a team of 38, some of who are also members Richmond and Zetland Harriers.

Year 7s Dan Cutter and Georgia Hadley took first place in their races, while James Longstaff and Will Smith won the Year 8 and 9 categories, respectively.

Year 10 student Jake Stephenson took part in the Year 11 race and secured a creditable second place.

Richmond School and Sixth Form College leader of sport leisure and community Tony Potter said: “We have some really dedicated and talented runners and that translated into some fantastic results at the area championships.”

Georgia, 11, of Hudswell, said: “It was very water-logged but that suited me as I love plodging through the mud.”

Jake, 14, of Richmond, added: “The race was a useful run out as we have area trials coming up and I am hoping to be selected for county, as I was last year, which was a great experience.”
