STUDENTS have been having a ball after being challenged to design a charity poster with an international flavour.

Darlington College L3 BTEC fine art student Bret Blewitt took the honours in a competition that attracted 68 entries.

His collage of images from Darlington and its twin towns in Europe captured perfectly the mood of internationalism for Mayor Tom Nutt, who is also the driving force behind the Town Twinning Association.

The 17-year-old’s design will be transformed into a host of promotional material including posters and menus for the annual Mayors Ball, which will be staged on April 15 in the Dolphin Centre.

Sponsored by Cummins Engines, the event will raise even more funds for 11 less well known charities that support the community of Darlington.

Bret, a former Longfield Academy student, of Darlington, said: “I sourced a host of images from Darlington and its twins towns and used Photoshop to blend them together.

“I was really pleased with how it came out but didn’t expect to win when there was such a lot of great designs. I feel really proud and am looking forward to seeing it being displayed in public.”

His tutor Pippa Eeles added: “We asked students from second year graphics and first year photographic and fine art courses to come up with some designs and I was delighted to see so many of them take up the challenge and produce some very impressive work.”

Coun Nutt said: “There were some amazing designs which make you feel proud of the students that go to Darlington College. Bret’s poster reflected the ethos behind town twinning perfectly.”

Communications director Steve Nendick, of sponsors Cummins Engines, added: “We have strong roots in the community and love to support local charities, particularly as we are celebrating our 50th year in the town.

“There was some fabulous artwork which showed great creativity, thought and IT skills.”
