BUDDING athletes sprinted, jumped and tugged their way to glory in the closest run house sports day in years.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School pupils pitted their sporting skills in an annual show of athleticism.

Years 6, 5, 4 and 3 competed on the track and in the field with a host of races, throwing competitions, long jump and a tug of war trials.

Records were equalled and personal challenges achieved in front of a crowd of siblings, mums and dads, who also enjoyed refreshments provided by Prep School Barney Friends.

In a close run contest that came down to the final relay races, Gilbert took the honours with 597 points beating Raleigh into second place with 574, Drake into third with 553 and Grenville fourth with 512.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School headmistress Laura Turner said: “This is the closest sports day we have had in many years. We have seen a real sense of team spirit, competition and super sportsmanship. It has been an excellent event.”

Team captain of the winning house Leona Baxter, 11, added: “It was a really close competition and we knew we still had it all to do in the final relays, so we were delighted to have won.”
