A SCHOOL sisterhood came together to raise hundreds of pounds for cancer research.

Female staff, students and friends of The King's Academy, Coulby Newham, took part in their own Cancer Research UK Race for Life, completing three laps of the school field or around 5km.

Year 8 dancers opened the event with a display followed by a warm-up before the ladies and girls, dressed in pink, headed off on their run, some in memory of relatives lost to the disease.

Principal David Dawes said: "Our annual Race for Life has been an important date on the academy calendar for a number of years and it's great that so many students, staff, parents and friends are still taking part."

Event organiser and PE teacher Lyndsey Henry: "Students from Year 7 to our sixth form, as well as parents, carers, mums, aunties and friends, joined in and made it a really great atmosphere. The academy's sports leaders helped me run it and everyone enjoyed taking part and contributing."

Annalise Bumby, 13, of Hemlington, who raised £24.50 in sponsorship, said: "I was running for everyone who had cancer and couldn't fight it."

Morgan Quinn, 15, of Hemlington, ran in memory of her Grandad Cook and raised £35.

She said: "I don't normally run, and this is the first time I've done Race for Life, but I wanted to take part to show I care and to raise money for research."

So far, The King’s Academy Race for Life has raised £1,200 with more money still coming in.
