AN industrious student has added another string to his bow with a unique design for an electric violin.

Barnard Castle School student Michael Liu completed the string instrument as part of his GCSE studies and his design and craftsmanship has now been recognised by the Furniture Makers Company.

The Grade 7 violinist came up with the idea for an electric violin which can be linked to an amplifier or headphones to practise without disturbing the neighbours.

Unlike a traditional hollow, veneered violin, Michael’s is made from solid walnut, developed using computer aided design, laser cut into a contemporary shape and fitted with an electric pick-up like a rock guitar.

Lower sixth form student Michael, 16, of Bishop Auckland, said: “I did a lot of testing and used my violin teacher to fine tune the sound. I was pleased with the final design and am delighted to gain some official recognition from the Furniture Makers Company.

“I really enjoy my music but one day would love to work in the field of engineering.”

Head of design technology Alan Beaty said: “Michael’s violin is brilliant and I believe is equivalent to first year degree standards. All of the students become so engrossed in their respective projects that we never know where it is gong to end, which is exciting for staff and students.

“DT inspires the students to use practically a host of academic subjects, from music to maths, showing them the breadth of skills needed in the rich and diverse world of engineering.”
