YOUNG performers mastered elements of Zulu and Swahili to take an audience on an authentic African adventure.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School pupils spent weeks rehearsing for the musical The Lion King, which they performed to packed houses of parents and peers, friends and families.

The Year 5 and 6 artistes staged two captivating performances of the Disney production, with music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice.

Adapted from a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, the musical features a battle of good versus evil as lion Simba tries to wrest control of the pride from his evil Uncle Scar.

Director Scott Edwards said: “Our children have thrown themselves into this production with incredible energy, creativity and commitment, learning complex harmonies and choreography. They have shown teamwork, perseverance and pride in their roles, even learning Zulu and Swahili along the way.”

Headmistress Laura Turner added: “We have witnessed our children grow throughout this experience, both on stage and off, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and talent.”
