A COLLEGE became a student’s rock when taking geology proved to be the wrong choice for a career.
Daniel Faill switched to Darlington College when he realised his A level choices of geology, applied science and English weren’t sustainable for work.
And the 20-year-old received an extra bonus when the college nursery which had offered him a placement went on to give him a full-time job.
“I looked at my A level choices and thought there wasn’t an obvious career in them,” said Daniel. “I thought, what am I going to do with myself, then realised I’d always wanted to teach. Darlington College offered a course that covered childcare and that is at the root of all teaching.”
Daniel was recruited on to the two-year T-Level in early years education and found the course to be ‘streamlined, relaxed and the tutors very supportive’.
“I was offered a placement at the college’s nursery and that soon turned into a part-time job, then a full-time position. So, not only did I come out with a qualification, I got myself a job which was a very lucky strike.
“The nursery is really good and the staff and manager are lovely. We are such a tight-knit team. I am very lucky to have such a good work environment. I would fully endorse going to Darlington College, especially as I got a full-time job out of it.”
Moving forward, Daniel may look to become a teaching assistant. “I love working with young children who are such good fun. It taps into my problem-solving skills as well because with some of the very young ones you really have to think carefully about your words so they can understand you.”
