SCORES of students were rewarded for their endeavours at a glittering awards night to be remembered.

Darlington School of Mathematics and Science staged the extravaganza, the culmination of the school’s most successful year ever.

Dozens of school leavers, many now studying at college, returned to the academy to collect an array of awards.

Darlington’s mayor Gerald Lee and his wife Ruth were special guests at the ceremony, which also featured entertainment by students George Stead, Joe Brown, Ellie Kilpatrick and Emily Davitt and a keynote speech by retired assistant head teacher Dave Tucker.

Mr Tucker, considered a legend at school with more than 30 years’ service, said: “Students are an absolute credit to themselves, their school and their parents.
“Many achieved beyond their wildest dreams because of their hard work and the support of teachers and their families.”

Prizes were presented for subjects, outstanding exam results, commitment, progress, determination, resilience and perseverance.

Head teacher Calvin Kipling said: “This is by far the best evening of the year as it celebrates real achievements of the young people we have in our care.

“This year has been the most successful in the history of the school and it is great to see so many parents and family members here to share in that success.”
