TINY tots in tea towels and tinsel took to the stage for their debut performance of Our First Nativity.

Little stars aged just three and four heralded the start of Christmas with the traditional yuletide nativity story at Bede Academy Nursery, Blyth.

Angels, shepherds, wise men, innkeepers and an assortment of farmyard animals told the story of the baby Jesus, born in a stable, before a packed audience of delighted parents, family and friends.

Bede Academy nursery teacher Joanne Baird said: “All of the children have been learning about the birth of Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas.

“This will be their first ever performance and they have all been extremely excited. We have been practising for three weeks and they have all loved dressing up and learning their lines.”

The 34 children also performed six Christmas songs including Wonky Donkey, Celebrate, Clap Dance and Shout Hurray and finished with parents and teachers joining in with a verse of Away in a Manger.

Principal of Bede Academy Gwyneth Evans, who watched the nativity alongside Irene Watson, headteacher of the primary academy, congratulated everyone on their performance.

“All the children performed wonderfully well. You could see how much work they had put into learning their parts and I am very proud of each and every one of them – it was a brilliant first nativity,” she said.

Parent Ashleigh Race, whose daughter Georgie Hetherington, three, took on the role of an angel added: “Georgie has been super excited about the nativity play.

“Not only has she learned her own part but she knows all of the words to everyone else’s part as well.

“All of the children performed with so much confidence, thanks to the teaching staff here, and to put on such a brilliant nativity at such a young age was absolutely fantastic.”
