CHRISTMAS stars took centre stage as primary pupils’ preparations took place for a slapstick seasonal spectacular.

Students at Eldon Grove Academy, Hartlepool, put the final touches to their modern day nativity, What a Star, which told the amusing tale of Leo, the little star, who is given a big job to do by guiding the wise men and shepherds to Bethlehem.

After proving word perfect the 124 pupils, aged five to seven, made their way to St George's Church, to perform before a packed audience of parents, grandparents, carers and friends.

Assistant head teacher Sharon Stephenson said: “The children have been rehearsing for six weeks and in that time have had to learn all of their lines and nine new songs.

“Although the main storyline tells the story of the traditional Christmas nativity, the play also has a lot of funny moments which gives all of the cast, and not just the main characters, a chance to shine.

“As we study all religions in school it is nice to celebrate a Christian festival with a performance where all the children can take part and understand the importance of each aspect of the Christmas story.”

Taking on the starring role of Leo was seven year-old Coben Falkingham, who opened the play with his star parents Kayden-Leigh Francis, six and Leon Murray, six.

The roles of Mary, Joseph and the donkey were played by Sophie Collins, six, Will Eddowes-Cahill, six and Thomas Wistow, six, supported by a cast of angels, shepherds, kings, animals, narrators and comedians.

“All of our teaching staff and teaching assistants have done an incredible job helping the children get ready for their performance,” added Mrs Stephenson.

“I’d also like to thank all of the parents and carers who have provided fantastic costumes and helped the children to learn all of their lines.

“Everyone has put so much effort into the play making it really feel like the start of Christmas.”
