A SHOWJUMPER is on a high after taking her horse Cloud to new heights.

Northallerton School & Sixth Form College student Lucy Hixson has qualified to take part in the prestigious National Schools’ Equestrian Association Eventers’ Challenge Championships.

The annual challenge, at Hickstead, on May 28, sees competitors take part in showjumping, dressage and cross country.

Lucy, 14, of Great Smeaton, near Northallerton, qualified as an individual by riding 15 hand Cloud clear within just three seconds of the optimum time, in the 80/85cm class, at Richmond Equestrian Centre.

The Year 10 student has been riding for the past 11 years and would love to compete for Team GB one day.

She said: “I was really pleased as I’m still getting acquainted with Cloud as I haven’t had him that long. Qualifying was a real confidence boost.”

Principal Keith Prytherch said: “Qualifying for Hickstead is an amazing feat and Lucy has done exceptionally well. Riding is extremely competitive and to have the presence of mind and the ability to go clear against the clock is truly impressive.”
