HUNDREDS of pupils took tea and cake among the bunting yesterday as they celebrated the royal wedding with a street party to remember.

The whole school, from nursery to Year 6, turned out in their finery at Springfield Academy, Darlington, to mark the happy day.

As Harry and Meghan were making final preparations for their big day at Windsor, 242 children aged three to 11 staged a street party, at the Education Village, featuring English food and music, ending with a rendition of the National Anthem.

The party was the culmination of a day of activities with a royal theme which was used in a host of subjects including maths and English.

Assistant head teacher Lynne Simpson said: “It is an amazing day for the whole country and just because we are hundreds of miles away from London, doesn’t mean we can’t get into the spirit.

“All the children wore red, white and blue, or wedding garb and it was the perfect opportunity to share our best wishes with the royal couple and mark British identity.”
