WOOLLY thinking proved to be the order of the day as staff swapped their smarts for festive attire to raise money for charity.

Around 90 staff at Haughton Academy, part of the Education Village, Darlington, donated generously to don jolly jumpers for the last day of term.

The Christmas quick-change raised £151 for the King’s Church, which operates a foodbank in the town’s Whessoe Road.

Foodbanks in this country now outnumber McDonald’s restaurants as increasing numbers of people struggle to make ends meet.

There are also around four million children living in poverty and many people in work whose salaries no longer cover the bare essentials.

Principal Jonathan Lumb said: “Our amazing pupils are always quick to help this community and recently handed over a mountain of provisions to the foodbank. I’m very proud to say that our staff have responded in kind with the charity jumper day.”
