A COMMUNITY in crisis was given a taste of festive cheer courtesy of a college and a town’s shopping centre.
Hospitality and catering students from Darlington College invited special guests who use the King’s foodbank for a Christmas treat, which was sponsored by the Cornmill Shopping Centre.
Families enjoyed a tomato soup starter, followed by turkey and all the trimmings, topped off with Christmas pudding.
Food and beverage students and catering apprentices helped prepare the festive feast and waited upon guests in the college’s Glasshouse restaurant.
Cornmill marketing manager Kelly Hutchinson said: “We try and help the community every year and, because of food poverty caused by the cost of living crisis, thought it would be nice to support people who use the King’s foodbank.”
Centre manager Susan Young added: “It’s hard to believe that in the 21 century there are so many people living in need but it is great to be able to do something to help.”
Level 2 food and beverage student Chloe Dowson, 18, said: “It is nice to be able to help people out and put a smile on their faces in these very difficult times.”
Darlington College events and engagement team leader Ross Lowcock added: “The students and catering staff did an excellent job as always and everyone was very appreciative of their efforts.”
King church's manager Caroline Todd said: “I just want to thank the college for their kindness in providing a beautiful free Christmas meal to many parents and their children. What a lovely blessing to be able to turn up to such a warm welcoming place and be able to relax and just enjoy a lovely hot meal all prepared by the staff and students.”
