STUDENTS will be working with the best hair stylists in the world after their college became a centre of excellence, the only one in the North.
Darlington College’s Elements hair and beauty salon, created to give the next generation of stylists the most realistic experience as they train, has been given the accolade thanks to a collaboration with the Fellowship of British Hairdressing.
Students were given the first taste of the prestigious status at an official college launch attended by industry experts including Fellowship president Ashleigh Hodges.
They experienced a number of demonstrations using professional models marking a future where they will mix with ‘the best of the best’, including experts from Vidal Sassoon. Under the initiative, students will be able to access expos, masterclasses, top educators and a finishing school.
“We are the only college in the region to become a centre of excellence for hairdressing and it is going to be brilliant for students,” said lecturer Anita Jinks. “They will benefit from demonstrations from specialists from all over the country and gain an insight into the very latest developments in hairdressing.”
The Fellowship was set up in 1946 in London by hairdressers wanting to share their passion for styling and artistry. Since then it has inspired generations of stylists who have gone on to work in the best salons and in fashion and entertainment.
Darlington College offers Level 1-3, part-time and full-time courses in hairdressing and barbering for students aged from 14. Tutors have years of experience in the industry which they now share with students and a good reputation that stretches across the country.
Anita said: “I love teaching as it gives us a glimpse of the people who will take over from us. That’s why we have a fully working salon at the college, a realistic working environment, complete with reception, hair wash area, trolleys and work stations, all kept immaculately so students can get the best experience before they go out into industry.”
Lecturer Sue Carr added: “The salon reflects the high standards that are expected in the industry and we make sure that they become routine to the students so they are ready for work. We also try and develop their behaviour and attitudes to make them more rounded.”
Her colleague Yasmin Greathead agreed. “Working with international stylists is inspirational and prestigious so our students will strive to be the best,” she said. “It also gives them an insight into the fashion world, competitions and networking opportunities. It opens doors and allows them to see that they can do anything they want within the industry.”
