A COLLEGE principal has been appointed to chair a board that will steer a multi-million pound investment in Darlington.

Darlington College principal David Gartland moves from vice chair to chair of the Plan for Neighbourhoods Board, replacing Angela Howey, which is overseeing the spending of £20m in the borough.

The board comprises representatives of the public, private and voluntary sectors, as well as community leaders, and has led a variety of engagement activities including issuing a questionnaire.

“It’s an absolute privilege, and a responsibility I take very seriously, to work with the community to make the right decisions for the town on how this money is best spent,” he said.

“I am working with some incredible people on this but we also need to hear from the residents of Darlington.”

He said questionnaires had been sent out to households and about 2,500 had been completed so far.

Previous finance from the Town’s Fund has been used to develop successfully a number of schemes including repurposing the old Northern Echo building, the Bank Top development and restoration of some the town’s ‘yards’.

“It’s been great to work with Angela and the board over the past few years and I’m honoured to take the reins,” David said.

“This is a great opportunity for the people of Darlington to help us make decisions about their local area. Residents know what this town needs and by having a voice in this process that will allow us to make informed decisions. We want to use this funding wisely as a lasting legacy to the town.”

Darlington’s MP Lola McEvoy welcomed the appointment. She said: “It’s fantastic to see David appointed. His experience, leadership and commitment to our town will be invaluable in driving this important work forward, ensuring the people of Darlington are at the heart of decision making and local growth.

“The Plan for Neighbourhoods is a £20m investment from the Government which is about making sure every area of our town gets the investment it needs so we can all live well. This is money for our town and decision making on what it is spent on should be led by you. Please fill out the survey and have your say on what you want it spent on.”
