Members of the cast entertained the audience as more than 50 guests were served tasty treats in the school’s dining hall.

The academy opens its doors to the community on a regular basis with students serving afternoon tea to elderly residents living nearby several times a year.

Guest Patricia Brown said: “It is always lovely and I really enjoy mixing with the young people.”

Sixth former Matthew Butcher, 17, added: “We enjoy it too and it is great experience for us to serve the community and talk to everyone.”

Bede Academy choir sang a medley of songs from Annie under the direction of director of music Helen Kerr.

Vicar of St Bede’s Newsham Richard Pringle thanked the students and catering staff for their efforts.

He said: “It is absolutely lovely to be here and we really value the strong connections we enjoy with the school. The tea was magnificent and we have been inspired by the young performers. This really is a great academy.”
