STUDENTS came under scrutiny from Scandinavia in an initiative expected to forge links across the North Sea.

Darlington College health and social care students played host to a party of visitors from Vinstra, 40 miles north of Lillehammer.

Seven students, aged 17 and 18, from the 450-pupil Vinstravgs secondary school joined a Darlington College class to share experiences.

Tutor Stephen Capper said: “It is great seeing the students mix and discover they have a lot in common.”

Norwegian teacher in nursing Tine Elisabeth Slang said she hoped the trip would develop into an exchange programme with the college, under the European Union Erasmus project, covering a variety of subject areas.

The five-day trip had been organised thanks to links between Norway and Richmond, the spiritual home of the Green Howards Regiment, which had helped the country during World War II when it was occupied by the Nazis.

She said: “We are particularly interested in vocational education, which can lead to further academic studies or apprenticeships, and we heard about the work of Darlington College. It would be great to strengthen links with the region.”
