A SOLICITOR’S professional journey has brought her back to the North East to join legal practice BHP Law.

Lydia McCaslin completed a degree in medical microbiology before converting to a legal career.

A specialist in wills, trusts and probate, she is now heading the team at BHP’s Newcastle office having recently returned to the region after a year in Australia.

A member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Lydia's expertise covers inheritance tax planning and powers of attorney as well as the administration of estates.

She worked for a number of well-known law firms in the North East and Cumbria before spending a year in Perth, where her husband, a surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, in Newcastle, was offered a fellowship.

"We're working towards expanding the department in Newcastle, which is all about meeting people and working with professional advisers to share our expertise. BHP Law is renowned for being a family firm with breadth and depth of experience, which is especially important in this area of law," Lydia explained.

She is encouraging people to follow up New Year resolutions to make a will and put their affairs in order.

Lydia said: "This is often the time of year when people think about it, and I wish they would do it because it makes things much easier and clearer for their families if something should happen to them, especially if their family is complex."
