STUDENTS upheld their academy’s reputation for sporting talent and competitive spirit in an annual four-way tournament.

The Emmanuel Schools Foundation 'Olympics' saw Northumberland, Yorkshire, Teesside and Tyneside competing for the honours.

Students from The King’s Academy, Coulby Newham, travelled to Bede Academy, in Blyth, which hosted the event and also welcomed players and runners from Emmanuel College in Gateshead, and Trinity Academy, Thorne, near Doncaster.

Teams from across the year groups competed in netball, hockey, volleyball, football, rugby and cross country, held on the sands at Blyth beach in a biting coastal wind.

In the team games, all the schools played each other in two hours of matches held in Bede Academy's sports hall, on its pitches, multi-use games area and rugby ground.

The Teesside visitors reaffirmed their winning status on the volleyball court, were runners-up in the hockey and netball and joint second in the cross country.

Head of PE at The King’s Academy John Stewart said: "The annual ESF 'Olympics' is always a great day of competitive sport and friendship for both staff and students.

“The wind and cold of the Northumberland coast tested everyone but we’re used to it on Teesside and our competitors put in fantastic effort in the name of the academy, winning one discipline and coming close seconds in three others.”

The King’s Academy will host the event next year.
