AN academy's youngest athletes displayed their sporting talent during a day of challenges and competition.

The children's prowess at hopping, jumping, skipping, running, throwing, balancing and even space hopper bouncing were all put to the test at Bede Academy South, in Blyth.

Ninety children in Reception were first on the multi-use games area and in the courts, with scores of parents, younger siblings and other family members going along to watch.

On the afternoon, PE staff and student sports leaders were drafted in to help manage the Year 1 and Year 2 activities, with a series of six challenges for the teams of children to move around.

House points were available for all ages and in all the challenges, with Oswald house coming out on top with 1,602 points.

Head teacher Irene Watson said: "We were blessed with fine, but not too hot, weather for our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 sports day and all the children put on a fantastic display of effort and determination.

"I'd like to thank so many families for coming along to support them, the parents' for providing us with the delicious cakes and our colleagues and students from Bede North for helping organise a lovely day for the children.”
