BARBERING and hairdressing students proved they could cut it with the best after hosting a skills exhibition for industry experts.
Budding barbers and trainee hairdressers from Darlington College staged demonstrations in front of an audience including members of the Fellowship of British Hairdressing, parents and friends.
Darlington College’s Elements hair and beauty salon, created to give the next generation of stylists the most realistic experience as they train, earlier this year became the only centre of excellence in the North.
The college offers Level 1-3, part-time and full-time courses in hairdressing and barbering for students aged from 14. Tutors have years of experience in the industry which they now share with students and a good reputation that stretches across the country.
Students showed off their barbering skills before others staged a glittering extravaganza of hair based on the natural elements of earth, fire, water and air, as well as the classic sci-fi movie The Fifth Element.
Fellowship educator Luke Ellis said he was particularly impressed as the barbers had only been studying for the past nine weeks.
He said: “These guys were so nervous at first and here they are not only cutting hair but talking to us on stage.”
Fellowship project leader Marlene Lamont said: “It has been a fantastic display of skills. The students have been working so hard to present this expo and it’s been absolutely amazing.”
Darlington College programme leader Yasmin Greathead said: “Around 50 students were involved and I am so proud of the work they have done. They have worked tirelessly and it’s among the best work we have ever seen at college.”
Darlington College’s head of head of service industries Maria Harrop agreed adding: “The show is a credit to everyone involved in the project which has been absolutely incredible.”
